Mark Pickering was one of my first ever employees when I started my business. Here are some of his observations about our early years:

"Thousands of people have worked for James over the years, but I was his very first employee. It was the mid-eighties and the corporate culture of the time was cold and cut throat but James didn’t subscribe to that approach. Recruitment was, and still is, a tough business. In our offices James fostered an environment of healthy competition where individual success was a win for the whole team. Even on days when nothing seemed to go right, James encouraged us to remain positive. He created a working environment that was challenging, exciting but, above all else, fun.

As a businessman, James’s record speaks for itself. He was never afraid to try something that wasn’t the norm. What stood out for me, though, was the high value that James placed on ensuring everyone shared in the sense of camaraderie. On Friday we’d close up early and unwind with a few drinks. We always left for the weekend on a high and enjoyed coming into work on Monday. It was an invaluable learning experience and one that stood me in extremely good stead when I went on to start my own business".
